The Two Byrds
Charlie Byrd, Jazz Guitarist, influenced by Django Rienhardt who brought the Bossa Nova to the US. Charlie was in Washington D.C. and heard Stan Getz at a gig, after the performance Charlie introduced himself and said to Stan, I have these albums I have collected from my tour in South America I’d like you to listen to. Stan went back to Charlies apartment and the rest is history. They both made an album together known as Jazz Samba which became a hit album and Bossa Nova was born.
Donald Byrd…in my opinion one of the most underrated Trumpet players in Jazz history. He replaced Clifford Brown when Clifford left “The Jazz Messengers” and in the late 50’s played with all the great names, Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Monk, and Sonny Rollins. To get to know his sound and playing style I recommend his All Day Long and At the Half Note Cafe Vol. 1 & 2 albums.
